WORKING SPACES, WORKSHOP & OUTSIDE SPACES
CHENGDU CHINA, DELIVERED|2019
When we were searching for our own office space, we collectively discussed our shared preferences: compared to the luxury of the property, we had more pragmatic needs. Instead of the grand entrances and central air conditioning of high-end office buildings, we desired good natural lighting and ventilation, a private bathroom, a relatively complete living space, a larger area, a more independent entrance, and ideally, an opportunity to connect with nature. Contemporary cities offer more comfortable and functional architectural spaces, but they also tend to erase personalized needs. We felt that the vast majority of office buildings could not meet our requirements. During the process, we found that there were often opportunities in commercial spaces: our current office is located on the top floor of a commercial street in the old town that is no longer trendy.
The space has the advantage of natural lighting from both sides and through-draft ventilation. Our entrance is independent and located at the end of the street, which is not ideal for commercial purposes but suits us perfectly. We have a rooftop garden that provides some outdoor space, but we still decided to carve out a small garden on the same floor. This garden separates the meeting room from the entrance area, creating a breathable part of the entire space: it has become one of the most utilized spaces in our firm.
Due to the nature of an architect's work, each project is unique yet highly interconnected. We wanted our workspace to facilitate efficient information flow. Apart from three specialized spaces—the server room, the material library, and the cat den—we tried to avoid partitioning and kept the entire space open. We set up multiple meeting areas and attempted to link with the adjacent structural engineering firm. More spaces are designed to be multifunctional, allowing for adjustments based on work and living needs.
